Hello everyone, In this post, we will discuss how to fix the SD card read or write error. We are going to provide solutions for mobile devices as well as laptops and PCs.

Four years ago, we made a YouTube video on how to fix SD card read and write errors by using custom recovery (Orangefox), and it really worked. You can see the video on our YouTube channel. We will be providing a few more solutions aside from that method.

What is the SD Card Read Error?

When trying to access or retrieve data from an SD (Secure Digital) card, an SD card read error occurs. A number of things, such as physical damage to the card or card reader, file system corruption, incompatibilities, out-of-date or corrupted drivers, and possible malware or virus infections, can cause this problem.

What is the SD Card Write Error?

When there is an issue attempting to save or transfer data to an SD (Secure Digital) card, it results in an SD card write error. A number of things, including not having enough storage space, file system malfunctions, issues with permissions, physical damage to the card, or malware presence, can result in this problem.

How Do I Fix the SD Card Read/Write Error?

There are numerous ways we can fix this error, unless the SD card is damaged. The first method will be to try to fix it through custom recovery.

Custom Recovery Method

We will be using custom recovery (orangefox) in this post. If you don’t have one, then check out this post on how to get one for your device.

  • Open Custom Recovery (orangefox) on Android.
  • Navigate to the menu and open Manage Partitions.
  • There will be 5 options all together; select Micro SDCard.
  • There will be 3 options available: Partition SD Card, Repair File System, and Change File System.
  • Click on Repair File System and allow it to automatically repair the SD card; if that is not successful, try another way.
  • If the above way fails, then click on Change File System. After clicking, it will show 6 options, you must click on vFAT, then redo the step and click on ext4. This will erase all files on the SD card, so make a backup of everything.

That’s it; we have now solved the SD card read/write error. Also, as said before, here is another alternative way to fix this issue.

Formatting SD Card with Laptop or PC

Formatting an SD card on a PC or laptop is a straightforward process. Here are the steps to format an SD card using a Windows computer:

  • Insert SD Card: Use an external USB card reader or place the SD card into your laptop’s card reader slot.
  • Open File Explorer: To access File Explorer, press Win + E.
  • Find the SD card: Locate the SD card in File Explorer by selecting “This PC” or “Computer.” It will have the designation of a removable disc.
  • On the SD card, do a right-click: Perform a right-click on the symbol denoting the SD card.
  • Select Format: Click on the context menu and choose “Format.”
  • Select a File System: You can select the SD card’s file system in the Format window. Use FAT32 for SD cards 32GB and smaller. ExFAT is advised for cards bigger than 32GB. To expedite the process, make sure the “Quick Format” option is selected.
  • Get formatting started: To start the formatting process, click the “Start” button.
  • Verification: You’ll receive a warning informing you that the SD card will lose all of its data. Once you’re sure you’ve backed up your data, click “OK” to continue.
  • Formatting Development: There will be a progress bar visible as the formatting process gets underway. Hold off until the procedure is finished.
  • Final Message: There will be a completion message visible once formatting is finished. To be done, click “OK”.
  • Remove SD card: Remove the SD card from your computer safely.

Now that it’s formatted, your SD card is prepared for use. Prior to physically removing the SD card from the card reader or slot, make sure you remove it safely. Make sure the SD card is not write-protected and that there are no error messages indicating issues with the card or card reader if you experience any problems during the formatting process.
